AN EVALUATION OF SCIENCE LABORATORIES IN FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC, UGEP, CROSS RIVER STATE, NIGERIA

This study evaluated the state of science laboratories in Federal Polytechnic, Ugep, Cross River State, Nigeria. The research examined the adequacy of laboratory facilities, equipment availability and functionality, and the safety standards in science laboratories. A descriptive survey research design was employed with a population comprising 45 science lecturers and 180 science students. Using purposive and stratified random sampling techniques, 25 lecturers and 120 students were selected as participants. Data were collected through questionnaires and an observation checklist. The instrument's reliability coefficient was 0.82 using Cronbach's Alpha. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and t-test statistics. The findings revealed that laboratory facilities were inadequate (mean = 2.15), equipment availability was poor (mean = 2.08), and safety standards were below acceptable levels (mean = 2.25). The study recommended urgent intervention by the institution's management and government agencies to upgrade laboratory infrastructure, procure modern equipment, and enforce comprehensive safety protocols to enhance quality science education delivery.
