This study examined the role of accrual accounting in managing financial records in Cross River State Polytechnics, Nigeria. The transition from cash-based to accrual accounting systems has become imperative for public institutions seeking improved financial transparency and accountability. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected from 120 accounting and finance personnel across the polytechnics through structured questionnaires. The study revealed that accrual accounting significantly enhances the accuracy of financial reporting, improves asset and liability management, and strengthens budget planning and control in the polytechnics. Statistical analysis using chi-square tests confirmed significant relationships between accrual accounting implementation and financial record management quality. However, challenges such as inadequate staff training, technological infrastructure deficits, and resistance to change were identified as barriers to optimal implementation. The study recommends comprehensive staff training programs, investment in modern accounting software, and policy reforms to support full accrual accounting adoption. These findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge on public sector accounting reforms in Nigerian tertiary institutions and provide practical insights for educational administrators and policymakers.
